Designing For Spoonflower’s New Metallic Wallpaper

Honestly, when I create designs for Spoonflower, I have fabric in mind. With my background in quilting, it is where my mind typically goes when the creative spark strikes. However, I must admit that my curiosity was piqued when Spoonflower announced its Vintage Glamour Metallic Wallpaper Challenge.

There were just two things I knew about this challenge - my designs needed to be larger and the colors would be a bit more challenging. Fortunately, Spoonflower gave us one hint in regard to color. White will look like gold on the gold metallic wallpaper.

Here’s what I eventually came up with:

And here is what the design looks like on regular wallpaper (and fabric).

While I love the gold metallic version of this design, I’m decidedly not a fan of the non-metallic version. The navy became black, so maybe I should have just used black. But I don’t know if that will really improve the design in its non-metallic variation. (In any case, I won’t be changing anything until the challenge is over.)

I will say say that I discovered designing wallpaper is fun. However, designing for metallics will probably remain low on my list unless I can figure out how to make a design look amazing on both metallics and non metallics.

More Peacock Designs

Given that I was disappointed with how my peacock designs looked on non-metallic paper, I set out to create some other peacock designs for regular wallpaper.

Much better!
